Board of education chairman Douglas C. Foyle hangs a school calendar on a wall in his house and looks forward to the end of each month.

“It’s always exciting to flip that calendar to the next month and see what the next month has,” he said.

A committee selected artwork from 14 students across the district from kindergarten to Glastonbury High School for the August to July calendar. There was also artwork on the cover and page six. The artwork will be showcased at the Welles-Turner Memorial Library in March for “Youth Art Month.”

Holly Buckley, the school system’s Director of Art, selects a variety of artworks during the art shows in the spring. The works are chosen not only for their artistic merit but also as examples of the rich curriculum across the district. The artwork then goes to a committee that narrows the selections, ensuring that all grades are included and there is a variety of media representing the full art program.

“It is truly challenging to go from every piece of artwork created in the district and bring it down to 12-15 pieces. We will look for pieces that are not only beautifully rendered, but also really have a message or really represent our program,” she said.

Buckley said she is proud of all the artists selected for the calendar, which is a celebration of the school system’s rich program.

“Through our art program, we offer them the opportunity to build their skills, to develop their concepts, to connect with themselves and their community. But really, we are teaching them how to think creatively.”

Foyle said it’s one of the board’s favorite nights of the year when the “outstanding artists” from across the district are honored.

“Their exceptional artwork was selected for inclusion in this year’s Glastonbury public school calendar. The calendar does more than share important dates...it also serves as a celebration of student creativity. Each month showcases the perspective skill and imagination of a different student artist and we are fortunate to have such a talented and inspired group of young artists in our schools.”
