Sarah Girach seemingly grew up in the blink of an eye. She went from roller sports to speed skating, winning ribbons and medals. She developed an Olympic dream. The first time Rocky Hill LIFE wrote about Sarah she was 9 years old. She’s 18 now and pursuing her dream of becoming a physician.

Music can lift one’s spirits. That’s one of many reasons why there is an international Make Music Day. This year it was celebrated on June 21. It’s the second time Rocky Hill has been a participant.

Rocky Hill is blessed with deep and interesting history from dinosaurs to modern enterprise. The Rocky-Hill-Glastonbury ferry, since it is still in operation after almost 370 years, is one of our most-valued treasures.

It is a first step in what is hoped will be many to establish public works of art around town. The Town Council recently approved a plan to paint brightly colored murals on two crosswalks in the government district. Mayor Allan Smith and the nonprofit arts group he founded called Rocky Hill Arts Now got the idea from crosswalk murals that decorate Main Street in downtown Middletown.

Summer is the season when thoughts turn to vacations, cookouts, trips to the beach and eating ice cream. Not that it doesn’t taste good the rest of the year, but there’s something about the hot weather that makes this frozen dairy treat taste that much more delightful. We decided to visit some family-owned ice cream shops in this area.

There’s something soothing about the companionship of a well-trained dog. That’s one of many reasons why Principal Cara Quinn would like to add a trained therapy dog to the West Hill School staff. She had one on hand the evening of April 28 during the annual book fair and children flocked to pet it and make friends.
