The concept is that everyone should be able to participate in general society. That includes those who are on the autism spectrum.
That’s why the town Human, Youth and Social Services Department, in partnership with the East Hartford-based nonprofit Shine Your Light, held an Inclusivity Event the evening of Feb. 9 at the community/senior center.

It was specifically designed for families who have children on the spectrum. Featured attractions were music, food, a sensory room, vendors and various activities including cookie decorating. Among those in attendance was Tom Cosker, chairperson of the town’s Commission in Inclusion and Innovation.
“This is a great time for families, kids and youth to have fun enjoying themselves in a welcoming environment,” he said.

Meg Bard is the executive director and founder of Shine Your Light.
“The Rocky Hill Greater Together Community Fund gave us a grant. We’re having a second event March 11. The idea is to expose people to unique and creative experiences,” she said.
