The gymnasium at Elizabeth Green School was buzzing with activity. Everywhere one looked there was something taking place to promote reading and literacy.

“It’s our Literacy Night. We partner with CCSU,” Reading Consultant Amy Inzero said.

Graduate students from Central Connecticut State University staffed some of the tables and worked with the young children to improve their language skills.

“The graduate students do reading stations with the kids. It’s to promote reading and literacy skills, get kids excited about reading over the summer,” she added. “This is the best turnout we’ve ever had.”

Reading gnomes dedicated to that goal were hidden at participating businesses around town. Principal Kevin Doran got into the spirit of the evening by donning a gnome costume.

“It’s important because we want to make sure that we build the skills and a love of reading,” he said. NL
