by Carl Wiser Staff Writer After speaking with Mick Ferraro of the New England Mountain Bike Association, we contacted Jan Bolland Tanner of Benidorm Bikes to get her thoughts on mountain biking in the Farmington Valley, including her picks for the best trails at various levels. Benidorm, Spain, is where Jan won a gold medal at the road cycling world championships in 1992.

Says Tanner:

Mountain biking has been a significant part of my life. I have been fortunate to be a "trail setter" from the days of riding and racing 26-inch-wheel hardtails and clearing water-gap jumps to the current years of bringing together and supporting the development of other female mountain bike riders. Continued trail accessibility has brought "grassroots" development and fun of bringing more girls and women to the peace and awesomeness of the woods! It is not about how fast someone is riding. It IS about the encouragement shared, strength gained and confidence built as more women develop their riding skills. You can hear the hooting and hollering as we blaze a trail!

With the growth of outdoor recreation and the development of numerous trail systems throughout CT, more people are riding bikes. With this increase in ridership, more families, young children, and women are building skills, friendships, and confidence through shared experiences on numerous trails, in our communities. From my experience, women may find it difficult to find others to ride with. I recommend joining a local shop for a group ride, seeking out a women's-only bike weekend or helping with a local youth development team, as you can usually meet another mother going through the same challenge. Local NEMBA chapters offer group rides for women too. As with everything, we must start somewhere. By starting somewhere, you meet someone who encourages you to develop another skill, ride longer or more often. Before you know it, you are helping someone else, and the cycle continues.

What kind of mountain bike is best for hitting the trails?

While AI can answer general questions, find a local bike shop that employs "people" who ride. Build a relationship with a local shop. Learn the differences between full-suspension mountain bikes and hardtails (bikes with front suspension only). Consider where you want to ride, the level of adventure you seek, and your budget. Once you are more informed, test ride a couple of bikes. You may even be able to demo a bike at your local shop. At that point, commit to riding, and then go have fun! You are always welcome to visit me at Benidorm Bikes to learn more.

Beginner Trails:

Huckleberry Hill in Avon

While Cowles Park is a go-to place for many, Huckleberry Hill offers old, winding trails accessed from different neighborhood starting points. You will end up in someone's backyard before getting lost. This trail is managed by Avon Land Trust. Winding Trails in Farmington is a great place for a family, but it requires a membership.

Intermediate:

Nassahegon State Forest in Burlington

Several trailheads offer access to riding, each providing varied degrees of skill challenges, climbing, descending and twisty-turny fun. Scoville Road provides a nice way to warm up before tackling progressive technical features. Nothing is too crazy, and it sure is beautiful.

Advanced:

Burr Pond State Park in Torrington

Simply Amazing! You will be challenged with rock features, climbs, super fun descents, and some of the most incredibly designed quarry rock trails. You may not want to ride if the rocks are wet, if it is very humid, or if you are tired. Be up for the challenge and enjoy the satisfaction of riding in such an incredible place.
